The challenge

Pevan & Sarah make education videos that teachers across the country stream in class every day. We came on as the development team while the platform was still young, and the first priority was the billing and subscription machinery a paid product needs underneath it.

What we did

Early on we set up a full development and deployment pipeline around the platform: separate staging and production environments, continuous integration and automated deploys, everything Dockerised, and error monitoring so we hear about issues quickly. That gave us a strong base to build on.

From there came the products the business needed, starting with school subscriptions. Schools sign themselves up, run their own subscription and bring their teachers in, with a Stripe billing setup underneath that handles prorations, invoices, EFT payments and renewals. We added subtitle management and video syncing through Mux, an admin reporting suite, and a long run of smaller features and upgrades. We’ve kept the frontend current too as the tooling has moved on.

The outcome

Years on, it’s a platform schools barely have to think about. Billing and reporting hold up, the streaming just works, lesson after lesson, and the work has carried on the whole time, each piece building on the last.
